Many people don’t realize that the photos they post to Facebook, Twitter or elsewhere online may contain information about the exact location where the image was taken. Depending on how the image was taken, it’s possible that the GPS information is stored along with the image.

If you’re concerned about privacy or, when taking photos in your backyard, prefer not to broadcast to the entire world your home address, you might want to remove the GPS information from your images before sharing them online.

If you’re not sure whether the image you took stored the location information, you can easily verify this from the Preview app and if you so choose, can remove the location data from the image before you upload it. Some services automatically remove GPS information from images while others do not.  To be on the safe side, you may wish to always remove GPS information from your images before sharing them.

To Remove Location Information From Images

1. Open the image in the Preview app.
2. Select Tools > Show Inspector from the menu to display the Image Inspector. The Inspector shows various information about the image.
   
3. Click the “i” icon on top of the window to display image metadata information.
   
4. Click the GPS tab on top of the window to display image location information. If you don’t see a GPS tab, this means that GPS information was not stored along with the image.
   
5. Click the Remove Location Information button on the bottom of the window.
   
6. Your image is now ready to share.
