Apple won’t be bringing the headphone jack back to iPhone, so if it’s a feature you’re not prepared to lose anytime soon, you’re stuck with the iPhone 6s. Or are you?

One man, who recently built his own iPhone from scratch using components sourced in a Chinese tech market, has figured out a way to install a headphone jack in the iPhone 7. It’s the ultimate mod for music lovers.

Apple did away with the headphone jack because the company sees it as outdated technology — plus it had to make room inside the iPhone for other, more important components. But for a large number of fans, life without that little port just isn’t as good.

Some have simply refused to upgrade beyond the iPhone 6s because they don’t want to be restricted to wireless headphones, or carry around a Lightning to headphone jack adapter. But there is a way to bring the headphone jack back to iPhone 7.

As you might expect, it’s not easy. In fact, it’s insanely difficult. But if you have the right tools, the right components, and incredibly steady hands, it is possible.

Scotty Allen, who showed us how to build an iPhone from scratch on his YouTube channel Strange Parts, is back to document the painstaking process he went through for this hack. It took weeks of work, some redesigning of the iPhone’s internals, and plenty of failure.

I won’t spoil the video, but I will say it all works out nicely in the end.

This obviously isn’t a hack that we would recommend you try at home. If you’re a soldering wizard and you have iPhone 7 handsets to spare, then sure, give it a go. But if you’re just a regular iPhone user with only one device, stick with wireless headphones and adapters… or iPhone 6s.
