Microsoft launches new Surface Pro with 50% more battery and more accurate Surface Pen

Posted May 23, 2017 | Windows

On Tuesday, Microsoft unveiled the latest version of its Surface Pro line, dubbed simply “the new Surface Pro,” at an event in Shanghai. The company also announced a new, more accurate Surface Pen and China Government Edition of Windows 10.

The standout feature is the device’s battery life—13.5 hours on a single charge. In a Windows blog post announcing the new Surface Pro, it noted that is 50% more battery life than the Surface Pro 4 and 35% more battery life than Apple’s iPad Pro. LTE Advanced will also be available as an option in future units.

The device has a 165 degree range of motion, enabling it to be set up in a variety of ways, the post said. It weighs a measly 1.7 lbs and it is 8.5 mm thin. “It’s lighter than the bag that you carry it in,” the post said.

The small form factor was achieved by the efficiency in the manufacturing process. The new Surface Pro utilizes 99% of the available space inside the device, the post said, and was built with 800 new parts.

In terms of compute, the new Surface Pro uses 7th generation Intel Core processors. Additionally, the core m3 and i5 devices run without fans, making them quiet as well. And while the core i7 does use a fan, it still runs under 18dB, the post said.

The new Surface Pro has a high-resolution, 12.3″ PixelSense display with 267ppi and a 3:2 aspect ratio, the post said. A new PixelSense Accelerator boosts the color in the display, and users can use the provided color-switcher to jump from SRGB to enhanced color quickly.

The new Surface Pen is twice as accurate as the original model, offering 4096 pressure points and 21 milliseconds of latency. The pen can easily take advantage of the new inking tools in the latest Windows 10 Creator’s Update. A new app called Microsoft Whiteboard on Surface was also announced to provide more collaboration across Surface devices.

The new Surface Pro also works with the Surface Dial.

The new keyboard covers have 1.3 mm of key travel and are available in a variety of colors. The new Surface Pro can also work with the Surface Dock to provide a more anchored desktop experience.

The new Surface Pro will start at $799 USD, launching in 25 markets on June 15, 2017.
