Surface Book 2’s First Firmware Update Brings Stability Improvements

Posted November 21, 2017 | Dev | Hardware | Microsoft | Surface | Surface Book | Surface Book 2 | Windows

Microsoft’s latest Surface, the Surface Book 2, started shipping last week. Like many other Microsoft products, the company released a firmware update on release day to fix some of the early issues with the device. The changelog for the update wasn’t released immediately, but Microsoft has published the changelog for the first ever Surface Book 2 firmware update overnight, notes Neowin.

Microsoft actually released two different firmware updates for the Surface Book 2. As the device ships with the old Windows 10 Creators Update (version 1703) rather than the latest Windows 10 Fall Creators Update (version 1709), Microsoft had to release two different firmware updates. The update for 1709 brings support for Windows Mixed Reality, while the update for 1703 only focuses on stability improvements.

Here’s the changelog for the firmware update available to users running Windows 10 version 1703:

  • Intel(R) UHD Graphics 620 – Display adapters 22.20.16.4840 improves system stability.
  • Intel(R) HD Graphics 620 – Display adapters 22.20.16.4840 improves system stability.
  • Surface UEFI – Firmware 387.1879.769.0 improves system stability.
  • Surface Dial Filter – Human Interface Devices 1.19.136.0 improves system stability.
  • Surface Integration – System devices 4.6.136.0 improves system stability.
  • Surface DTX – System devices 2.27.136.0 improves system stability.
  • Surface UCSI Device – Universal Serial Bus controllers 2.14.136.0 improves system stability.

And here’s the changelog for the update for 1709:

  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 – Device adapters 23.21.13.8808 required to support Windows Mixed Reality features.
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 – Device adapters 23.21.13.8808 required to support Windows Mixed Reality features.
  • Surface ACPI Notify Driver – System devices 5.15.136.0 required to support Windows Mixed Reality features.
  • Surface Integration Service Device – System devices 4.14.136.0 required to support Windows Mixed Reality features.

The fixes listed above aren’t anything too interesting, although they will probably improve the reliability of the device. Needless to mention, if you have a Surface Book 2 that is still running Windows 10 version 1703, it would probably be a good idea to get the Fall Creators Update right now, especially if you want to give Windows Mixed Reality a try. Also, Paul has been using the Surface Book 2 for a little while, so make sure to check out his first impressions of the device here.
